Privacy Policy

Nearmo is a messenger that works without the internet. Phones talk to each other directly over Bluetooth. There is no server, no account and no phone number. This page explains what that means for your data.

The short version

• The app has no permission to use the internet. Android blocks it from sending anything online.
• We (the developer) never receive any of your data: no messages, no contacts, no usage statistics, no crash reports. (The QR scanner from Google Play services may send Google diagnostics; see Permissions.)
• Everything is stored only on your phone, and private and group messages are end-to-end encrypted.

What is stored on your phone

• Your identity: a key pair created on your phone, your nickname and, if you choose, a profile picture.
• Contacts and groups you added, with their names and pictures.
• Messages (text and voice) and reactions.
• Settings, such as language, theme and privacy options.

The private key and group keys are protected by the Android Keystore. You can also turn on encryption of the message history and an app lock (PIN or fingerprint). Android's automatic cloud backup is turned off for this app. You can delete messages, set them to disappear after a time, or remove everything by uninstalling the app.

What nearby phones can see

Because Nearmo works over Bluetooth, other phones in range that run Nearmo receive some data:

• A device identifier derived from your public key. It is broadcast while the app is searching, so nearby phones can tell devices apart. It does not contain your name.
• Private and group messages are encrypted. Phones may pass them on to reach someone further away (mesh), but only the intended recipients can read them.
• The open "Nearby" chat is not encrypted. Your nickname and what you write there can be read by anyone nearby. Do not post private information there.
• Your profile picture is sent only to your contacts, encrypted.

You can stop searching at any time in the app, and Bluetooth can be turned off.

Permissions

• Nearby devices (Bluetooth): to find other phones and exchange messages.
• Location (Android 11 and older only): these Android versions require it for any Bluetooth search. Nearmo does not read or store your location.
• Microphone: only while you record a voice message.
• Notifications: to tell you about new messages.
• Run in the background, start at boot, battery optimization exemption: so messages still arrive when the screen is off.
• Fingerprint: only if you turn on the app lock.

The QR code scanner is provided by Google Play services and runs on your phone. The app itself does not have the camera permission and does not receive the camera image, only the scanned code. Google Play services may send Google diagnostic data about the scanner (for example device and app information, error codes and performance), as described in Google's ML Kit data disclosure. You can also add contacts by pasting their code instead of scanning.

Blocking and reports

The list of people you block is stored only on your phone. If you report a message, your email app opens with the message text, its author's nickname and identifier, addressed to us. Nothing is sent until you send that email yourself. We use reports only to deal with breaches of the rules.

Backups

You can export a backup file yourself. It is encrypted with a password you choose, and you decide where to keep it. It contains your identity, contacts, groups and settings, but not your messages.

Children

Nearmo is not directed at children under 13.
